What Is Anal Fistula?

Anal fistula is a small tunnel that forms between the inside of the anus and the skin surrounding it, often resulting from an infection in the anal glands.

Definition and Causes

An anal fistula, also known as fistula-in-ano, is an abnormal passageway that develops from the anal canal to the skin outside the anus. It typically arises from an anal abscess, which is a painful collection of pus caused by an infection in the anal glands. When the abscess does not heal completely, it can create a tunnel that connects the infected gland to the skin.

The Symptoms of Anal Fistula

  1. Anal pain: Often intense and throbbing, especially during bowel movements or when sitting.
  2. Swelling and redness: Inflammation around the anus may occur.
  3. Fluid drainage: Pus, blood, or stool may drain from the opening of the fistula, which can appear as a small hole in the skin near the anus.
  4. Fever: In some cases, if an abscess is present, fever may accompany other symptoms.

Treatment Laser

Laser treatment for anal fistulas is a modern, minimally invasive procedure that precisely seals the fistula tract, resulting in less pain, quicker recovery, and lower risk of incontinence compared to traditional surgery.

Laser treatment involves inserting a thin, flexible laser fiber into this fistula tract. Once positioned, the laser emits energy that causes the tunnel to shrink and seal from the inside, preserving the surrounding muscles and tissue without making large incisions. The laser fiber is slowly withdrawn while delivering energy, effectively closing the fistula like a zipper
